We've Talked About You Talking to Me: Workamajig To Do's

Noel, Calico's interactive director, loves how Workamajig's To Do's help him assign work without having to talk to people.
Interactive projects aren’t hard. They’re just complicated. Well, no, they’re also hard — Calico wouldn’t have hired me if interactive was something that Molly could pick up after a couple of weeks on Skillshare. But they’re also complicated. Hard and complicated. On a given Web project, I might have to make sure the design is responsive, links are all valid, alt text is included, images are uploaded, forms are active, keywords are optimized — and that’s before we even talk about hosting and CMSs. So many things to keep straight. So many things to talk about. With people.

It’s not that I don’t like people. It’s just that if I could possibly sit in my office with my headphones on and never have to actually try to talk with anyone, I would be just fine. But since I can’t do everything myself, and sometimes I have to call on other people to take on some of the simpler jobs, and sometimes that means talking to people, I really like Workamajig.

Problem: How do I make sure all the important details are covered without having to, you know, talk to anyone?

Solution: Workamajig’s To Do function keeps track of everything, and communicates everything, for me.

First, to get it out of the way: Why not use some other system, like Basecamp, that has to-do lists? Well, one of the biggest reasons is that Workamajig integrates its to-do functions with all the other functions. Without that, if an account services or accounting question comes up, someone has to come ask me about it. And what are they doing then? Talking to me. Possibly while standing in my office. With Workamajig, that doesn’t have to happen.

And there are plenty of other things I can do without talking to people. I can carry on entire conversations without having to actually talk with anyone. If I need to replace an image on a site, I just make a To Do for “find X image” and assign it to a creative, and they upload it to Files, and there it is. I need to add a new press release? I make a To Do for “upload X press release” and assign it to whoever will get the press release from the client. Or from our PR department — I don’t know where the press releases come from, and with To Do’s, I don’t have to. I need someone to check all the links before we send it to the client? To Do, “check every link on the site,” assign it to Molly. Does Molly like doing that? No, she always looks sad when I ask her to do it. With To Do’s, I don’t have to see her look sad.

Now that I think of it, there are lots of ways I could use Workamajig’s To Do’s in everyday life. Is there a job number for “ask that one girl to go out with me”? Can we have our first date in Conversations? This is promising.
