Nearly two months after launching the Workamajobs blog, we have a new editor at the helm: Vicky Shoub.

Vicky joins us from Workamajig where she’s held a range of responsibilities. At Workamajobs, she will be responsible for all the content that goes on this blog as well as other pages.

We sat down with Vicky for a quick chat to know her interests better.

Q. How long have you been at Workamajig? What are your day-to-day responsibilities?

VI actually interned at Workamajig during the summers from when I was in high school and joined full-time in 2018. I started out just learning about business and my responsibilities have really developed over time. Workamajig’s creative team has a more collaborative structure vs the traditional hierarchy, so we all do a lot of everything 🙂

I work on graphic design, social media marketing, and also put together blogs for Workamajobs – a treasure trove of resources for creatives.

Q. What sparked your interest in design?

I guess I was just born with creative genes! My mother is a talented artist & calligraphist and each of her children inherited her creativity with a unique twist.

Q. Who are some designers you admire?

As for most people of my generation, Apple’s Jony Ive had a big influence on my design sensibilities. Among graphic designers, I’ve also long admired Paul Rand, Milton Glaser, Chip Kidd and of course, Saul Bass. The work IDEO has done has been a massive inspiration as well.

Q.Let’s talk about the other side of the table – agencies. Have you ever worked at an agency?

Not directly but I have done some freelance work for agencies.

Q. If not, would you want to?

I’m open to the idea but I do love my job right now, so who knows!

Q. What is your writing process like? Any favorite blogs?

I usually write in Google Docs since it makes collaboration much easier. I like to create a detailed outline in a separate text document before I start writing. Once I do have the outline, I like to write in one go otherwise it’s very easy to lose focus!

I sometimes listen to ambient sounds to help me focus while writing. Some light instrumental music also helps a lot.

As for favorite blogs, I love Dan Lewis’ Now I Know, BrainPickings and SmashingMagazine.

Q. What are your plans and vision for the Workamajobs blog?

I really hope to turn Workamajobs into the resource for designers and the people who hire them. I want to use this platform to help designers get the jobs they want and build thriving careers.

At the same time, I hope to help creative agencies become better at hiring for creative roles. Working at Workamajig, I’ve seen how difficult hiring can be. I want to show agencies how they can improve their hiring processes and get their attrition rates under control.

Q. Besides design and writing, what are your other interests?

I love photography and am pretty much my family’s unofficial photographer. I get the super-fun job of chasing after everyone to gather their pictures for calendars, photo books etc.

I also love travelling & love to grab a quick impromptu vacation to somewhere I haven’t been. Most recently, I traveled to Cyprus – it’s definitely one of my faves!

That’s all! Future posts and comments on this blog will be edited by Vicky. Get in touch with her if you want to know more – or leave a comment on this post.
